In 1893 Captain Henry Stentiford purchased a parcel of land in the Penola fruit colony, naming it after his beloved ship Laira. In 1964 Eric Brand bought the property, selling it 30 years later to McWilliam's, who sold it to the Casella family in 2015.
Captain Stentiford planted his original landholding to Shiraz. Brand's Laira is located in the Coonawarra on South Australia’s Limestone Coast. At first glance, Coonawarra appears featureless. Until you look down. The red soil is the famous terra rossa, thin red clay over deep, crumbly limestone. Brand's Laira is renowned for being home to some of the Coonawarra's best plantings.
Brand's Laira creates regionally authentic Coonawarra red wines. The winery's range includes two of the Coonawarra's finest reds: One Seven One Cabernet Sauvignon and Stentiford's Old Vines Shiraz from the first plantings.
